L’obiettivo generale del Fondo è promuovere la competitività, l’efficienza e la capacità di innovazione della base industriale e tecnologica di difesa europea (EDTIB) in tutta l’Unione, il che contribuisce all’autonomia strategica dell’Unione e alla sua libertà di azione, sostenendo azioni di collaborazione e ampliando la cooperazione transfrontaliera tra soggetti giuridici in tutta l’Unione, in particolare le PMI e le «mid.caps», nonché rafforzando e migliorando la flessibilità sia delle catene di approvvigionamento che delle catene del valore della difesa, ampliando la cooperazione transfrontaliera tra soggetti giuridici e favorendo un migliore sfruttamento del potenziale industriale di innovazione, ricerca e sviluppo tecnologico in ogni fase del ciclo di vita industriale dei prodotti e delle tecnologie per la difesa.
